The mires consist of a rectangle with a line through it and a step pattern with a line through it. If there is no corneal toricity or if the axis is at 180 or 90 degrees the black lines on the two patterns will be aligned.
If there is corneal toricity at some other axis, the black lines will not be aligned. Before making the power measurement you must rotate the body of the instrument to until the lines are aligned.
